How Accurate is a Polygraph Test?
A meta-analysis (combined analysis) of over 250 studies into the accuracy of polygraph concluded that polygraph tests are between 85% and 98% accurate depending on the testing technique which is utilised. Polygraph tests which focus on a single issue yield the most accurate results.
How Accurate is an EyeDetect Test?
The EyeDetect test has been scientifically proven to be 90% accurate for single issue testing. There are 14 peer-reviewed studies validating the accuracy of the EyeDetect test, including a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied. Polygraph and EyeDetect tests can only be used to test more serious acts of deception (dishonesty) and/or unlawful activities. The tests cannot be used to investigate minor or frivolous matters.
Are Polygraph and EyeDetect test results accepted as evidence?
Polygraph examination results have been regularly accepted as evidence at the CCMA in South Africa. The examination results should be used to corroborate other evidence. (Please see our Polygraph at the CCMA page for more details). Whether the results will be accepted and how much weight is given to the evidence is decided on a case by case basis. Properly obtained confessions obtained during testing can certainly be used as evidence.
EyeDetect testing has been accepted as evidence in court in the U.S.A. The district court in Texas, U.S.A recently instructed an accused in a drug possession case to undergo an EyeDetect test as a means of assisting the court to reach a finding.
Can I be forced to undergo a polygraph test?
No. A person must undergo a polygraph examination willingly and must not be cooerced in any manner to undergo the test. Persons undergoing the test will ordinarily be asked to sign a consent form prior to the test which serves as written proof that they underwent the test out of their own free will.
Note: Some employers require their staff to submit to a polygraph examination at the employer’s request. This requirement is often contained in the terms and conditions of employment documents. If the employee refuses to undergo a polygraph examination in such cases they may be in breach of contract with their employer.
